    asa follow-up, I did try to follow one guide on wordpress.com to create a custom tag page. I loaded it up to our site, but it didn’t seem to work (404 error)

    Here’s the code I used:

    <pre class=”brush: css; gutter: false; first-line: 1; highlight: []; html-script: false”><?php get_header(); ?>
    <div id="content-container" class="normal">

    <?php livingos_abovecontent(); ?>

    <div id="single-content" role="main">
    <header class="page-header">
    <h1 class="page-title"><?php
    printf( __( 'Tag Archives: %s', 'livingos' ), '<span>' . single_tag_title( 'whatmatters', false ) . '</span>' );
    ?></h1>
    <?php
    $tag_description = tag_description();
    if ( ! empty( $tag_description ) )
    echo '<div class="subhead">' . $tag_description . '</div>';
    ?>
    </header>

    <?php
    //content loop
    livingos_archive_content();
    ?>

    </div><!– #single-content –>

    <?php livingos_belowcontent(); ?>

    </div><!– #content-container –>
    <?php get_sidebar('single'); ?>
    <?php get_footer(); ?>

    An update: the show posts widget appears fine on an ipad, but broken (looks as described earlier) on my imac 24″ in both Chrome and Safari. Looks ok on my wife’s macbook pro…do I just have something broken on MY computer? If so, I am sorry to be of bother, but if you have a clue how to get my machine to see and render web pages as the rest of the world does, I would be deeply grateful!

    Please help me! Every widget change I attempt to make to my Xi-Themed site fails Even adding a plain text widget with the word test fails. I can change an existing text widget to read text, but NOTHING else works. Do I have a corrupt database? I am flabbergasted and losing hair. I look forward to your help! My site is http://fishersofmen.org. All posts look great, but it is the changing of widgets or widgeted sidebars that I can’t seem to overcome. I do fine on my test site (http://cleantest.fishersofmen.org/) so what gives?
    Please help. I will email you my username and password (I am Admin). ANYTHING! Please!

    Tim:

    Wondering what are the differences between your new Pure theme and Xi. Both responsive, both off Living OS responsive framework. Is Pure a child theme of Xi? I would like to know what features might be different to see if I want to switch to this for our church.

    Thanks! Jerry McNamara (Fishers Church)

    Excited about the update, Tim!
    Does ” updated single image size to same aspect as slider” mean that once the thumb rebuilder is run, you can set a thumb in WP mdeai library and that is what will display in the post/page teaser widget if image is enabled? Here’s hoping!

    Terri, I think you will find that you can “shorten what displays before the “more” tag being using the “Show post excerpt” feature in the widget. If you take the first sentence or two of your post and put it in the lower section of the add/edit post marked as “Excerpt” (about halfway down the page, then you have set how much or little shows. You can see this in action on my testing site, http://cleantest.fishersofmen.org/. In the case of my site, I put the URL in for my “Features” category page (mysite.com/category/features)
    We are all trying to learn how to get the most out of what Tim and the ThemeLoom folks have cooked up in their XI theme. Best regards! Jerry

    Tim:

    Thanks for the reply. Now that the slider is available in the iphone-sized width, your suggest sounds workable.
    You wrote “The thumb edit in WP does work if you update all thumbs ” I wonder, if I tell WP to default thumbnails to 240 x 240, does that help XI use the cropped thumbnails I designate in WP to show up as the post/page teaser?

    Tim:

    I will play with this as you suggest. I think I am grasping what you are saying. Sorry for my wrong wording about thumbnails done on the fly.

    I guess my brain is running into one wall, though. If I create a quality, wide photo for a featured image (so it looks good in slider), WP default is to create all the sub images of the varying sizes from the center of that original image. WP gives the opportunity to go in and edit the image–in my case cropping it. It appears that I have three choices in WP: crop all sizes, crop thumbnail only, crop everything except thumbnail. Since I haven’t wanted to ruin my original wide upload, I’ve been selecting thumbnail only.
    I guess what I wonder is if in your code
    add_image_size( ‘widget’, 240, 240, true ); //thumbs used in widgets

    could you experiment with changing that to 240, 240 to “thumbnail”?

    It seems to me that your widget would then pull whatever portion of the original image that the user has designated as thumbnail.

    If you notice in my featured slider, I often desire to have a large image on one side with ad copy-type text on the other. Taking a center-only approach to thumbnails won’t help me.
    A last way to say it, if WP gives me the built-in ability to designate what part of my image is a thumbnail, why can’t XI be tweaked to just say, “If you want that to be your thumbnail for this post or page, so be it!”? Thanks for everything! Jerry, Fishers Church

    My poke into the source code is showing that the theme is grabbing images that are 240px by 240px. Here’s a sample from the same picture:

    http://cleantest.fishersofmen.org/wp-content/uploads/hd_louzamp_speaking_8-27-2011-e1313631094764-240×240.jpg

    Like I said, I am a coding wannabe, but why that image and size? Why not code it so it grabs the designated WP thumbnail and scale or resize it as needed?

    Am I making any sense at all, St. Tim? I just don’t think that XI reaches it’s full potential of displaying posts and pages, if the user-designated thumbnail from within WP can’t be used.

    I want my site to look as great as your demo…say, how did you get your thumbs to look so great and get cropped to what you wanted? Were all of your images originally square in dimensions, even the slider photos?

    Tim, I had rebuilt the thumbs with that plug-in. Unless I am just dumb, what I see as the result of running that plug-in is that all changes I have made to any image’s thumbnail are stripped out. I then went and manually rebuilt a few thumbnails. These show properly in the media library, and when posted to an article, and I chose thumbnail as size they come through as I cropped them. For some reason, it seems to me that the way XI is pulling the images for the mini-thumbnails in the posts and pages unit is not asking WP if there is already a designated thumbnail, and then re-sizing that.
    Am I making any sense?
    Tim, I am in love with the flexibility of this theme, and I really want this to work, please help. This seems to have “blown up” since I installed 1.6
    Here’s an example of a post that might illustrate this

    http://cleantest.fishersofmen.org/2011/man-to-man-an-evening-with-louis-zamperini/
    This is in the slider and looks great.
    It also has the same picture at the top of the article using the “post-image-head” custom field you provided
    Then the first image (aligned right) is the newest version of the thumbnail I recreated AFTER I upgraded to 1.6 and re-ran thumb rebuilder plug-in
    The second thumbnail (aligned left) is the curiousity to me. It is the thumbnail I designated when I first built the demo site (I think with XI 1.4). Even though I have run thumb re-builder twice, that image remains intact as formatted (you can tell it’s different than the aligned right one above it; shows the gentleman’s full head, while the first–newer–one aligned right crops to a square around his face.

    What’s going on? Why doesn’t XI use either of these for the mini-thumbnail on my home page.
    I am wondering,is it as simple as changing the coding of the widget to do what I see on the edit image-advanced settings-css class? That instruction reads “alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-77” Could you tinker with the widget to see if “size-thumbnail” makes any difference?

    Just wondering. Man, I need this to work! Thanks and blessings! Jerry

    Tim:

    Here is one plug-in i explored:

    List Pages Shortcode. But it isn’t listed as up to date with WordPress 3.2.1.
    I also read Joost de Valk’s post http://yoast.com/showing-subcategories-on-wordpress-category-pages/, but it is criticised for being buggy by another bloke

    And “Function Reference/wp list pages” page on WP.org admits it is out of date.

    I really have tried, but I prefer to be a pastor than a coder. This is my last hump to get over, and I can blitz my way to a functional site with your great HTML5 theme!

    Regards! Jerry

    I thought I would offer my work-around for this, as it might help others.
    1. I use the theme options-slider-slider category, and use a category I created called “slider” (note: I made this be a child category under another category called “Featured).
    2. I also changed the theme options-slider to pull posts NOT Features.
    3. I placed the themeloom “show posts” widget into First Homepage Area. I set this up as follows:
    title: Latest From [mysite]!
    category: Featured
    number of posts: [your desired number, I did 8]
    More Link Text: Click Here For More News!
    More link URL: http://mydomain.org/category/featured/
    Checked the boxes for “Show post thumbnails” AND “Show post heading”
    Layout: selected two columns

    Now, when I write posts that I want to be in the slider AND be seen when the slider is gone (on a mobile phone), I make sure to select BOTH the parent category of “Featured” and the child category beneath it “Slider” [you don’t have to do them as parent child, but rather than have alphabet decide, I did–it means I can also remember turn off the slider category if I want because it is quickly noticeable].
    I also make sure to add a featured image AND I ensure ALL of the ones I insert are EXACTLY 1024 x 480 [I didn’t like how all the content on my page re-adjusted every time an image with different dimensions rotated in].
    This ensures my site visitors see the latest content first, which is generally what you want to feature in a slider anyway. If I want something in the slider that is “static” but doesn’t need to show up in the “latest news” section, I merely unchecked the “featured” category on that post and voila!
    This works for me, and I hope it can help someone else!
