Some pages I want to use the featured image as the top of the page header.
Other pages I want the featured image to be used in the widget (as a visual menu item).

Some pages I may want the feautured image to be used for both a header and a widget.

I appreciate that WP and the theme will resize images as needed.

The notes recomends sizes for images used in header (1024 x 360) and for widgets (465 x 218).

    These sizes have different ratios.
What happens if pages with widget and header sized feature images are then displayed using the widget option?

Does the auto resizing reduce them to the same size?
    Or the same width?

WordPress does the resizing to create all the required images from the original image you upload.

So you uploads just need to be at least the size of the biggest intended user.

Yes, aspect ratios are different. This is unavoidable unless you settle for some strange looking images in places.

We have a new version of the widgets coming out which lets you pick from any of the image sizes present on your system, which will include the standard WP thumb, medium and large.
